American Medical Association president John Nelson caused a stir in February by defending the right of the Catholic-run New York Medical College, as a private institution, to ban a gay student group. Now he's hoping to make nice by committing to addressing the health disparity concerns of gay people.

Following a March 12 meeting requested by file Gay and Lesbian Medical Association in response to Nelson's comments, Nelson agreed to expand the scope of the AMA's Commission to End Health Care Disparities to include gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans.
