1 HONOLULU, HAWAII

Gov. Linda Lingle on July 11 signed a bill into law prohibiting landlords from discriminating against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. At the same time the governor vetoed another bill that would have added protections for gender identity to Hawaii's antidiscrimination law.

2 LOS ANGELES, CALIF.

In response to strong opposition from gay and lesbian leaders, the city council on July 22 reconsidered the use of taxpayer dollars to cover the cost of honoring local antigay pastor Fred K.C. Price with a public square in south Los Angeles.

3 CHICAGO, ILL.

Atl five Republicans on the Cook County board of commissioners in July officially withdrew their names from a routine proclamation welcoming the 2006 Gay Games to Chicago.

4 FAYETTEVILLE, ARK.

Studio 716, a gay bar that once before had been the target of an arson attempt, was destroyed by flames on July 16.

5 MIDDLEBROOK, VA.

St. John's Reformed United Church of Christ on July 9 was vandalized with antigay graffiti and a small fire started in the church's sanctuary, Earlier that week the UCC's general synod overwhelmingiy approved a resolution supporting same-sex marriage.

6 TAMPA, FLA.

A jury found Ronnie Paris Jr., 21, guilty July 14, of second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse after beating his 3-year-old son to death in January because he didn't want the boy to grow up gay. The child's mother, Nysherrah Paris, is charged with child neglect for failing to report the abuse.
