In anticipation of a Vatican purge of gay clergy, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, William Skylstad, wrote in his diocesan newspaper in October that "witch hunts and gay bashing have no place in the church."

An administrative law judge in October ruled that an HIV-positive woman couldn't be denied a liver transplant paid for by taxpayers.
3 AUSTIN, TEXAS
The Ku Klux Klan held a rally at City Hall on November 5 to show its support for a constitutional same-sex marriage ban on the November 8 ballot.
4 BROOKFIELD, WIS.
St, Luke, a Roman Catholic school, canceled a fashion show sponsored by American Girl, maker of a popular line of dolls, because the company is contributing to the lesbian-affirming group Girls Inc. Money raised from the show was to go to a new playground and a refurbished library.
5 PONTIAC, MICH.
In what police described as a possible hate crime, two transgender women, ages 46 and 54, were attacked on October 26 after two men allegedly called them names and followed them home.
6 LOUISVILLE, KY.
The Reverend Todd Eklof, a Unitarian minister, filed a lawsuit on October 28 against the Kentucky Farm Bureau, claiming the agency fired him for speaking publicly against a state constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples.
7 CONCORD, N.H.
A special commission on same-sex unions in October urged state lawmakers not to allow gays and lesbians to marry and not to set up a domestic-partnership registry for couples who cannot legally marry.
