Crocodiles and child custody

Advocate, The,  Feb 15, 2005  by Jay Blotcher

What do a crocodile, teenagers, and gay fathers have in common? They're all part of a $30 million lawsuit against the Greenwich, Conn., police department for alleged harassment. Gary Ryder, 50, filed the suit after police entered his home in November and removed his two foster sons, claiming their safety was endangered by a pet crocodile.

During a previous search of the home, police sought the whereabouts of the estranged 16-year-old son of Ryder's former partner when they allegedly saw the crocodile in a bathtub. When he went to the police station to explain, Ryder claims they insinuated he was a pedophile and called him a "faggot."

The existence of the crocodile was never confirmed or denied, and Ryder's foster children have been returned. He and his new partner, Steven Scheno, have since moved out of Greenwich. Said Ryder: "We lost our home, we lost our reputation, and we lost the children for a little while."
