Bruce Steele's editorial refers to a crisis in the "Human Rights Campaign--our best-funded champion in D.C. and on the nation's airwaves" [Letter From the Editor in Chief, January 18]. HRC shouldn't be funded by gays at all. We have wiser and more ethical "champions" in Lambda Legal and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Now HRC is discussing "compromises" like abandoning gay marriage as a cause and even entertaining the idea of supporting Bush's trashing of Social Security in return for consideration of gay civil unions. HRC's notorious "compromise" support of Alphonse D'Amato for reelection as New York senator over liberal senator Charles Schumer was another such betrayal of gay interests, also supported by the Sonderkommandos of gay politics, the Log Cabin Republicans. We can't expect these embarrassing gay groups to offer sensible aid to gay causes, but we certainly can ignore and refuse to support them.
