It's all in the timing
Advocate, The, Feb 15, 2005 by Ed Johnson, A. Sheppard
I really enjoy reading your magazine; however, your January 18 issue has an error. The time line ["Big Gay Year"] features a lesbian couple getting married March 8 in Asbury Park, N.J. There is only one gay couple who were and are married in Asbury Park and the entire state of New Jersey. They are Ric Best and Louis Navarrete, married March 8.

[Editor's note: Donna Harrison and Kathy Ragauckas were applying for a marriage license at City Hall in Asbury Park on March 9 in our photo. The Advocate regrets the error.]
The July 14 entry in your time line read, "AS expected, the antigay Federal Marriage Amendment fails on a procedural vote in the U.S. Senate, providing what is widely considered to be an embarrassing defeat for President Bush and Republican leaders in Congress." I could not disagree more. I don't think the introduction of the bill was ever about its actual passage. I think it was all politics. Every one of the 50 senators who voted against the measure will face a campaign commercial from their opponents in the next primary or general election. Getting to label these politicians as antifamily or antivalues is what the bill was really about.
