For top artists including Green Day and Tori Amos, a guy named Steven Alvarado helps make art happen. As studio manager of New York City's Dubway Studios, which provides audio recording and mixing services for film, TV, and music projects, Alvarado keeps everything on schedule. He also represents for queer people. "As far as I know I'm the only gay studio manager in NYC," Alvarado says. "This still seems to be a hetero male--dominated world. I want people to know what we do here, and I want to do everything to work with [gay people and projects]."
Since 2002, when he was hired by Dubway owners Al Houghton and Mike Crehore, Alvarado has pursued or fostered Dubway's relationships with an impressive roster of gay clients including The L Word, Antony and the Johnsons, Fred Schneider (who's coproducing an album for U.K. gay fave Sophie Ellis-Bextor), and Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez.
A musician in his own right, with a new album titled The Howl Sessions, Alvarado admits he has encountered some homophobia in his career. "I've had people, not knowing I was gay, make [antigay] comments," he recalls. "And I'm always quick to step in!
