Look at us now
Advocate, The, July 19, 2005 by A. Chadderdon, Tom Warren, Nick Ames
Sorry, but I must use a cliche to describe your June 21 issue: the best ever! When I saw your familiar glam shots of Travis Shumake on the cover, I feared we were in for a long issue of pretty gay youths, but you have never covered so many timely issues in such a substantial way. Having a combat officer show up the irrelevance of "don't ask" in Iraq, student leaders toll it the way it is in our high schools, and a new columnist take on the "Bible brigade," in rapid succession, takes some guts.

Just wanted to congratulate you on the excellent new format and layout of the latest Advocate. You continue to rise above and get better each issue.

First, I like the new look of your magazine. Now the complaint. I noticed that of all the up-and-coming gay leaders you profiled, not one of them was overweight. And none were what some might consider plain or downright ugly. Your magazine continues the stereotype that the only gay men worth profiling are those who are cute, sexy hunks. For the rest of us, your world doesn't exist. But in reality, ours is more realistic.
