DIED: Alvin Novick, 79, a gay Yale University biologist, early political advocate against AIDS, and former president of the group that became the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, of prostate cancer, April 10.

DIED: Michael Stern, 56, the founder and artistic director for the Corona Civic Light Opera in California and a highly regarded veteran of regional performance companies nationwide, of an aneurysm, April 24.
