Reggae's homophobia won't play
Advocate, The, March 15, 2005
Is this the end to a high-profile battle against homophobic reggae stars like Beenie Man and Sizzla, whose lyrics have called for the murder of gays and lesbians? The British gay rights group OutRage! on February 4 announced a worldwide deal with reggae record industry chiefs to ban the release of songs that incite antigay violence.
In turn, OutRage! and other gay rights groups agreed to halt publicity campaigns against the industry on the topic. "We hope this is the beginning of a new era in reggae music, where the artists rekindle the spirit of one love, peace, unity, brotherhood, and social justice promoted by reggae pioneers like the legendary Bob Marley," said Peter Tatchell of OutRage!
