Nondisappearing act

Advocate, The,  Oct 11, 2005  by Justin Scott

The show might be titled Before I Disappear, but it doesn't seem to be vanishing anytime soon. The one-woman autobiographical play, written and performed by transgender actress Alexandra Billings, debuted in Chicago in 1996. Nearly a decade later, the 43-year-old Billings--who has been living with AIDS for years--has moved her play out to Los Angeles, where it opened in September at the Avery Schreiber Theatre.

Leaving her longtime home, Chicago (where she was once voted a Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune), isn't as difficult as one might expect, however; Billings was born in California, and she is more than ready to share her story with the West Coast. "Even if what I am isn't quite as new as it was 10 years ago, I think the story I'm telling--figuring out who you are and being that thing--is: she says. "It's OK to go through the mess of your life because you can come out whole in the end."
