Sire Records might not be the gayest record label ever, but thanks to distribution via media giant Warner Bros., its relatively high concentration of openly queer artists (Erasure, k.d. lang, Book of Love) and enduring gay icons (Madonna, the Smiths) have made an impact on a larger audience than they might have with any other indie imprint. Spanning 30 years of Sire history, this retrospective encompasses everything from the androgynous jazz stylings of Little Jimmy Scott and chart-topping pop of teen idol Tommy Page to quintessential cuts from the late-'70s New York vanguard, for whom founder Seymour Stein coined the term new wave (the better to dupe radio programmers frightened by the connotations of punk). The set's accompanying DVD packs some dud videos--"Drifting, Falling" by Ocean Blue plays like a bad Haircut 100 knockoff--but there's nary a bum track on its three compact discs. Just Say Sire rules.
