This letter is in response to your Gen Q article about Arizona State University's gay fraternity being the first national collegiate-based fraternity of its kind ["Gay and Greek at ASU," August 30]. In fact, I, along with 10 other men, founded Alpha Lambda Tau fraternity in June 1999 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This was actually the first college fraternity founded for gay, bisexual, and transgender male college students, thus making it "the first of its kind." The founding chapter was recognized by UNLV in the fall of 2000.

The group you chronicled in your article, Sigma Phi Beta, was actually a recognized chapter of Alpha Lambda Tau starting in 2001 until it was suspended for violation of our zero-tolerance drug policy in 2003. This was documented by officials at ASU who chose to ignore the national suspension of this chapter in the misguided attempt to promote their university as being "tolerant." This group, upon being expelled from Alpha Lambda Tau, re-formed under a different name.
