Every summer a Shakespearean love story unfolds at Boston's Public Garden as crowds gather to watch the city's famous pair of swans, named Romeo and Juliet, court each other by touching their bills together to create a heart shape. Now it turns out the beloved animals are actually a same-sex couple.

Garden officials were delighted when the swans mated, but when their eggs failed to hatch they had the animals tested and discovered they were both female.
