Making waves

Advocate, The,  April 25, 2006  by Liza Schoenfein,  Ernie Hayes

As bogus "family values" issues are used more and more by the Right to drive a wedge through the country, I'm even happier to have taken my little boy on an R Family cruise ["Ro, Ro, Ro Their Boat!" March 28]. The conversations it sparked between us--and the understanding it engendered in him--were invaluable. I hope the upcoming HBO documentary inspires the same sort of positive dialogue among other families far and wide.

I was saddened by your cover story on Rosie and Kelli O'Donnell. It is unfortunate that so much of the queer community has forgotten that all LGBT people are not white, not wealthy or educated, not American. Reading about Rosie and her very expensive "gay vacations," I wonder [it] that print space could have been used for bringing to light the effects of queer life on those who do not have the luxury of a $5,000 cruise. The People magazine for the homosexual stance that The Advocate seems to hold is anything but activist, anything but helpful to our communities. I wonder if I am the only person to find this so disturbing from a publication that at one point actually did advocate for positive change.
