Hate and hope on the bus
Advocate, The, April 25, 2006
When someone spray-painted FAGS-MOBILE on their tour bus in Cleveland, Tenn., on March 16, it didn't stop participants in the Soulforce Equality Ride from carrying their pro-gay message to nearby Lee University. In fact, it spurred several students from the conservative religious college to reach out to the group and help scrub the bus clean.
Jacob Reitan, codirector of the Equality Ride, said he hoped the students would "go back to their school and wipe away the stain of antigay discrimination that still goes on every day at Lee."
The following Monday, several people taking pint in the Equality Ride were arrested at ultraconservative Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. Read the riders' stories in their own words at www.equalityride.com and www.advocate.com.
