The Book of Daniel
* Starring Aidan Quinn
* NBC, Fridays
Working as a hybrid of Six Feet Under and 7th Heaven, NBC's new dramedy The Book of Daniel is just clever and real enough to successfully separate itself from a dreary mid-season pack.
Created by gay writer Jack Kenny (Titus), Daniel stars Aidan Quinn as Daniel Webster, an Episcopalian minister with both a weakness for prescription drugs and a family on the verge of a breakdown (The teenage daughter sells weed, while the wife swills martinis). There's a gay Republican son (Christian Campbell), who wears a lot of sweaters; he's the most blandly centered of the bunch.
The reverend receives advice during conversations with a decidedly retro-looking Jesus. The dialogue is often laced with humor that characters deliver without sounding like phony television creatures, and the show promises to be fun to watch ... while it lasts.
