Poor paper trail

Virginia may not be the most gay-friendly state, but a proposal to bar gay adoptive parents in other states from getting both of their names listed en birth certificates issued in Virginia just went too far, according to a state senate committee, which blocked the legislation by one vote on January 19.
The news was music to the ears of Tim Fisher and partner Scott Davenport: They are the proud fathers of Kati, 15, and Fritz, 13--neither of whom has ever had a correct birth certificate with both dads listed. "Virginia is clearly not a place to be if you want to be a gay or lesbian parent," says Fisher. The family lives in Maryland; Kati and Fritz just happened to have been born in Virginia hospitals.
