Need to know: point foundation
Advocate, The, Feb 28, 2006
There was a time when openly gay college students faced difficult and unique challenges with little support from their families and communities. But that changed when the Point Foundation came along, and this year the group is stronger and more successful than ever.
In 2006 the organization is offering nearly a dozen named scholarships and is establishing a new partnership with the Matthew Shepard Foundation. The Point Foundation, which supports academic achievement in higher education among LGBT students, will also continue its partnership with MTVU, MTV's 24-hour college network.
The foundation expects 5,000 applications by its March 1 deadline. In most cases a Point Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation, and living expenses. In addition, Point Scholars are matched with mentors from the professional world who serve as positive role models and provide personal support. To find out more, visit www.thepointfoundation.org.
