Grey's Anatomy: Season One
* Starring Sandra Oh
* Buena Vista Home Entertainment
With its pop culture--savvy dialogue, bitchy characters, sexual tension, unusual cases, and an occasional squirt of gore, ABC's Grey's Anatomy bears similarities to other hospital-set TV shows (House, ER). Yet this addictive series sets itself apart by focusing on the harried lower ranks of hospital interns, all of whom are desperate to show their stuff in the OR: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina (Sandra Oh), Izzie (Katherine Heigl), and George (T.R. Knight).
One highlight of the lean nine-episode first-season DVD set is episode 3, in which Keith David plays a gay patient who shamelessly flirts up a storm with bumbling George. It's a funny, humanistic turn.
The DVD extras are more than adequate, including commentary tracks, excised sequences from the pilot, and a succinct, upbeat behind-the-scenes documentary. Don't miss the bizarre French New Wave-lampooning "Avant-Garde Trailer," which juxtaposes phrases like "C'est Audacieux" and "Des Temptations" over black-and-white clips.--L.F.
