Transgressions
Advocate, The, March 27, 2007 by Mary O'Neal
As a huge fan of Pedro Almoddvar's work, I was appalled to see the use of slurs such as transsexual and transvestite to describe transgender people ["All About Pedro," February 27]. A huge stigma still overrides the "real" inclusion of transgender people in the all-mighty rainbew, and writer Stephen Rebello should hide his face in shame for using outdated and antiquated references. As an African-American lesbian, I cannot understand the blatant ignorance behind those labels, which remind me of one I never appreciated: Negro.
