We love New York

Advocate, The,  June 19, 2007

On April 27 brand-new New York governor Eliot Spitzer kept a campaign promise and introduced a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in his state--the first time a governor has done so. For days later more than 1.000 supporters swarmed the legislature in Albany. the state capital, to lobby for the bill's passage.

Among the officials on hand was out assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell (Rosie's brother), who is carrying the marriage bill in his chamber. "I promise I will stop at no time badgering, fighting, arguing, charming, kissing--whatever I have to do to make sure that equality happens," he told the crowd. Although a vote on the bill, especially in the Republican-controlled state senate, is not expected this year, public opinion is on the measure's side: In a recent online survey by the journal Crain's New York Business, 63% of respondents supported marriage equality.
