Traveling with Narciso Rodriguez: the gay Cuban-American fashion designer behind this fall's hot new fragrance tells us his travel dreams …

Advocate, The,  Nov 6, 2007  by Chandler Burr

You were a big fan of the Concorde?

It was so convenient. I don't love spending long periods of time on a plane unless I'm sleeping, so to fly somewhere in 3 1/2 hours was incredible. It was like the bus. The service was great until the end, when everything got a bit old. I miss it!

And your favorite first class is?

[British Airways is] great. Lufthansa--they whisked me off the plane, took my passport away and put me in the shower in the lounge, whisked me through customs with my passport all done, whisked me into the Mercedes, and I was out of there. But I'm just so loyal to Continental. It's very easy. They know me on every single route after so many years.

Any travel peeves?

The airport. It used to be you dreaded the longevity of the flight. Now it's the airport. I usually leave out of Newark because it's good, for an airport.

You must have you been nearly everywhere now with your work.

No. There's tons of places I still want to hit. I want to go to Greece--I've never been, can you believe it? And I want to go to the Maldives--that's a total dream. I was talking to a friend, and she said, "I just got back from the North Pole. And next year I'm going to space." I thought, Oh, that's good. And I want to go to Cuba. It's where my parents are from; they were born in Camaguey. I've never been.

And with Cuban parents it's tougher for you.

Yep. The U.S. really checks now; they know everyone who's going. I've been advised not to go. But those are my travel dreams. Well, at the moment those are my dreams. I mean [spreads his arms], there's the whole world.
