What made this bright halo?

The halo around the sun appears when a thin cloud of ice crystals refract incoming sunlight. The crystals which produced this halo were suspended about 9,100 to 12, 200 meters (30,000 tio 40,000 ft) in the atmosphere, and lasted for about two hours. According to folklore, a ring around the sun means rain is coming. In fact, high icy cirrus clouds that produce haloes often precede stormy weather.
