What's a green architect?

A green architect designs buildings in ways that minimize the structures' impact on the environment. For example, a building may have a "green roof," on which plants grow. This type of roof helps keep the building cool, so less energy is needed to air-condition the inside.

What do green architects do?

Green architects, like traditional architects, work with a team of designers and engineers to make drawings and models of buildings. But they specialize in environmentally friendly structures.

How do you become a green architect?

Many colleges have programs that focus on green--or sustainable--design. After graduation, most architects complete a three-year, on-the-job internship. Then, they take licensing exams to become registered architects. For green architects, it's important to get Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accreditation. This designation shows others that they are knowledgeable in green design.

How much money do green architects earn?

The salary range varies depending on the architect's experience and background. In the first five years after school, architects often earn $35,000 to $60,000. An architect with 15-plus years of experience usually earns between $70,000 and $100,000.
