Sneaker smarts

Science World, Sept 20, 2004 by Sarah Endo

They can't do your math homework, but the new Adidas 1 shoes claim to be the world's smartest sneakers. An on board computer customizes the shoe's cushioning to match your step.

When you pound a mile, Newton's third law of motion explains that the ground pounds back at you with an equal amount of force (push or pull).

Softer surfaces create less force. Leap from lush grass to hard concrete, and your Adidas 1 will sense that change in force and tell the shoe's adjustable cushion to squish more. Result: The shoe absorbs more energy and the impact feels softer. The cushioning "changes as your needs change," says Christian DiBenedetto, an Adidas scientist. That's thinking on your feet!
