Warm up by the fire

E: The Environmental Magazine, Jan-Feb, 2004 by Freya Sachs

With winter upon us full-force, many people are drawn to their fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. This year, rather than depleting your local forest, try all-natural hearth products from Hearthwise. The Massachusetts-based company offers fireplace logs produced from mill waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Wood material is compressed and heated to about 400 degrees, releasing the natural lignin that binds the logs together. The logs burn longer, hotter and cleaner than traditional cordwood, and result in less air pollution. These recycled products can be ordered in bulk or for $6.49 a box, which includes a starter stick. CONTACT: Hearthwise, (978)3422740, www.hearthwise.com.
