Get juiced at night - Sound Sleep

Men's Fitness,  Oct, 2002

IF YOU'RE HAVING trouble sleeping, first check your mattress, then check your conscience. (That paternity suit may not be so frivolous after all) If that fails to produce the desired effect--and a tall glass of warm milk ain't your cup of tea--try cherry juice. Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio has shown that tart cherries are high in melatonin, the hormone that helps control the body's rhythms and is sometimes promoted as a sleep aid.

Cherries are also full of anthocyanins, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory chemical that gives berries their deep red-blue color. However, cherry juice does have anywhere from 21 grams of sugar per serving on up, depending on the manufacturer. If you're sugar-sensitive, a glass before bed may counteract the benefits of the melatonin.
