The late Dr. Herman Tarnower's highly regimented program, outlined in his book The Complete Scarsdale Diet, demanded that followers give up alcohol, butter and oil and subsist on 700 calories a day of mostly protein. Snacks consisted of carrots and celery. The doctor's rigidity and the lack of a co-credit on his book helped drive jilted lover Jean Harris to gun him down.
