BASIC KITCHEN UTENSILS

In addition to the barest of kitchen essentials (a bottle opener and a backup bottle opener), there are two things every guy should own a set of quality nonstick cookware and some well-crafted knives. Initially, this may seem like a big cost, but unlike your 401(k), good kitchenware will return on your investment for years to come. This is really not as much gear as it seems. OXO International makes a fine line of these small, handheld products. For anything more extensive, just get married and you'll get it all for free.

For cookware, you need:

* a 10-inch saute pan

* a 2-quart saucepan

* a 12-inch skillet (All-Clad, Calphalon and Kitchen-Aid make excellent ones.)

For knives, get the basic three:

* a 10-inch chef's knife

* a 6-inch paring knife

* a boning knife to cut and carve fish, poultry and meat

Other must-have kitchen items:

* a can opener

* a rubber spatula for flipping eggs and pancakes

* a wire whisk

* a soup ladle

* measuring cups and spoons
