Calling it a mere race isn't really justice. Rather, the Iditarod is a test of both man and beast. It's an annual testament to our disdain for limits and our unquenchable desire to challenge nature's worst. Every March, approximately 100 mushers and their teams of up to 16 sled dogs battle not just one another but also Alaska's frigid tundra and dense forests. Their journey covers more than 1,150 miles and can last 17 days. Competitors drive their dogs through some of Earth's most harrowing elements--snow, ice, low visibility, unspeakably frigid temperatures, hours of darkness, and unpredictable terrain. The goal: to not just survive but to be the very best.
