March madness

Men's Fitness,  March, 2008  by Cora Daniels

Sure, checking NCAA tournament scores at the office seems harmless enough. But there's a reason March Madness drives corporate America crazy. According to current estimates, U.S. companies will incur more than $1,2 billion in lost productivity this year as a result of workers watching games, checking scores, and planning office playoff pools.

In fact, if all 22.9 million working college basketball fans with Internet access spent just 13.5 minutes of their day focused on the tournament, it would cost their employers $86 million in ill-spent wages. Not everyone is complaining, though. The NCAA tournament has proven to be one of the most profitable broadcast contracts in sports history. Last year, companies spent $497 million in advertising during the tournament--more than both the NBA playoffs ($424 million) and the NFL postseason, including the Super Bowl ($423 million).
