Spread the message - Publisher's Letter

Since our inception 14 years ago, it's been the steadfast mission of MEN'S FITNESS to convey the benefits of regular exercise--not just from a physical perspective, but also from a mental and spiritual vantage. We would like to believe that readers have taken our message to heart. And based on your letters to the editor and our various survey results, it appears that we are on course to achieving that goal.

But the message has done more than find its way into your lives: It has also become yours to spread. Whether you know it or not, people look up to you for having the willpower and dedication to find the time to get in shape--and stay there. And although it is a large one, looking the part is only the first step; encouraging others to follow is the next.

This task is especially crucial in light of America's ongoing battle with the bulge. You need only reference our "America's Fattest Cities" report in last month's issue for a sobering reminder of the number of overweight U.S. citizens and the devastating social and economic consequences resulting therefrom. What you may not realize is that you can actually do something about it.

From the time of my first publication, Your Physique, more than 60 years ago, changing lives has been one of my goals. Nothing can quite match the feeling I get when I talk to someone who, by reading my magazines and following some portion of my advice, has managed to use exercise to improve his or her life.

The enthusiasm of each response leads me to believe that you too can help propagate our message of better living through consistent exercise and sensible nutrition. You too can help change lives. Help us change America from the land of the fat to the land of the fit.
