Dirt devils: welcome to boarding's newest frontier
Men's Fitness, April, 2005 by Brian Libby
IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS SURFING--THE BIG bang of board tiding. Then the action spread from ocean to street with skateboarding, and soon it reached the ski slopes. But the DNA that controls man's boarding obsession always seeks new ways to defy gravity--risk of serious injury be damned.
Enter dirtboarding, or mountainboarding, a mix of classic skateboarding and hardcore mountain biking performed on mega-size skateboards with giant inflatable wheels. It's an extreme experience custom-made for the insatiable thrill seeker. And you can do it almost anywhere. "The boards ride well over grass, dirt, and gravel--they're very adaptable and allow you to do jumps and tricks on almost any terrain" says Don Baker, a two-time former national champion and decade-long dirtboarding devotee. "All you need is a minimal slope."

Grass slopes make an ideal beginner's course, says Kevin Delaney, who's been tiding for eight years. But the real fun lies on steeper wooded courses like bike trails and old dirt roads--the perfect place to catch eight feet of air while soaring over a hill for the first time. And if you do gather a few bumps and bruises along the way (see page 120), think of them as badges of honor. "After all" says Delaney, "the best sports are the ones where you walk away at the end of the day with a bit of blood dripping from your knee or elbow"
