Shaving face
Men's Fitness, April, 2005 by Kimberly Keily
Getting a close, comfortable shave isn't impossible--even for guys with the thickest, roughest stubble. You just have to take the right steps. We spoke with shaving expert Martial Vivot of Paul Labrecque Gentleman's Barber Shop in Manhattan, who gave us a tutorial on the proper way to shave your face.
Here are Vivot's tips--and our favorite tools--for conquering your face: Wash with warm water and soap, and be sure to scrub as well--it'll help prevent ingrown hairs. Instead of using your regular bar, try a soap or cleanser specifically designed for the face [1]. Soften the skin and stubble using a pre-shave oil [2]. Apply shaving cream, then start shaving [3-6]--but never go against the grain. When the blade encounters too much friction, it will scratch the skin. And always use aftershave [7]. Shaving irritates your face regardless of your prep work, so you need to rehydrate your skin [8, 9], particularly if you take a blade to your face every day.
