The numbers are in—and up - HIV Digest - cases of HIV infection - Brief Article

Men's Fitness, April, 2002

After seven consecutive years of declining numbers, new AIDS cases in the United States appear to be rising. According to preliminary figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 42,008 new cases reported in 2001, an 8 percent increase from 2000.

Dramatic jumps occurred in Kentucky (59 percent), Georgia and North Carolina (41 percent each), and New York City (47 percent). A decrease in cases was noted in several states, including Michigan (28 percent) and Kansas (22 percent). While these statistics, based on health-department reports, need to be confirmed, similar early reports over the past six years have been accurate.

The cumulative number of AIDS cases reported to the CDC through December 2000 is 774,467. Adult and adolescent AIDS cases total 765,559, with 635,451 cases in males and 130,104 cases in females. The total of reported American deaths from AIDS is 448,060. Worldwide, the virus is estimated to have infected 60 million people, killing 22 million.
