> DR. HERMAN TALLER claimed in his 1961 book Calories Don't Count that a high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet was the ticket to a healthier, leaner life. Taller, a Brooklyn, N.Y., obstetrician-gynecologist, was following in the low-carb footsteps of William Banting and Alfred Pennington. However, in 1967, he was accused of fraud by the Food and Drug Administration for claiming his safflower capsules would help reduce body fat, when in fact no clear link could be found.
