This month's myth: The more you sweat, the more calories you burn
Men's Fitness, June-July, 2006 by Craig Ballantyne
THE TRUTH: If this were the case, every fat guy who ever drenched a chair by falling asleep in it would be well on his way to a lean physique. Saunas, heat pads, and long jogs under sweat clothes are all effective for helping you lose weight temporarily, but it's only water, and you'll replace it as soon as you drink fluids again. The only way to burn a lot of calories is through activity, which, depending on the weather, your clothing, and your body's unique thermoregulators, doesn't have to mean heavy sweating. In fact, you could run a mile without working up a significant sweat at all and still burn hundreds of calories.
