Eat your loaves fishes. . - Book Of The Month - What Would Jesus Eat? - book review
Men's Fitness, June, 2002
WHEN THE NEW BOOK What Would Jesus Eat? crossed our desks recently, we skeptically thought of church suppers with fried chicken, macaroni salad and Jell-O molds. But by examining the actual foods consumed in the first-century Mideast, Orlando, Fla., physician Don Colbert, M.D., has turned out a highly readable book full of sound nutritional advice.
IT TURNS OUT THAT what Jesus really ate was lots of fresh vegetables, whole grains, fish, and low-fat, kosher meat, not to mention beans, olive oil and red wine--all in all, a standard Mediterranean-style diet that science has shown to be a smart approach to eating. And who can resist what may be the best chapter title of all time: "What Would Jesus Eat for Dessert?" (Answer: fruit, nuts and a little honey.) While it's clear that the folks in greater Nazareth ate this way mainly because that's what was available, Colbert makes a good case for choosing this diet intentionally: Fresh vegetables, whole grains and fish are excellent foods for keeping you healthy and helping you maintain a proper weight. And if following Jesus' example will help someone eat better, we say, amen!
