> SHOULD YOU NEED TO DO SOME heavy thinking, try chewing a stick of gum first. When subjects in a British study chewed gum for three minutes, they did better on a test of memory and cognitive abilities than people who chewed nothing or chewed "imaginary" gum. The researchers speculate that the improved thinking may result from a slightly faster heartbeat, which speeds delivery of oxygen and glucose to the brain, or from a surge of insulin that occurs when the mouth waters in anticipation of a meal.
