HERE'S HOW TO protect your lower back when lifting that embarrassingly large stash of Wham! paraphernalia out of your basement.
* Stand next to the box with a shoulder-width stance, or in a staggered position for balance.
* Bend from the knees, not your waist, and keep your trunk vertical.
* Using both hands, get a good grip, then slowly straighten your legs. Do not twist your torso.
* Once you're up, hold the box as close to your body as possible to keep your center of gravity from moving outward and stressing your back.

* If you have to turn while carrying the box, don't twist--pivot with your feet.
