Just like a pill

When's the best time to take vitamins--morning or night? And should I take them on an empty or full stomach?--L.M., Wichita, KS

Depends on what you're popping. For multivitamins, Lisa Dorfman, M.S., R.D., an American Dietetic Association spokesperson, suggests taking the pills at night on a full stomach. That way, you get one dose of nutrients during the day from the foods you eat and another while you sleep.

For individual vitamins, like C of E, time of day isn't as important as taking them with food. "Your body is better able to absorb nutrients when your digestive tract is already processing food," Dorfman says. Plus, food may offset side effects from vitamins, like nausea.
