Motor city makeover: three regular guys from Detroit go in for some serious bodywork

Men's Fitness, June-July, 2004 by Amy Eckert

Style: Jeff's taste in clothing leaned to the conservative: suits. So Christopher framed his salt-and-pepper hair with a dark blue tailored suit. Worn with a bold-colored striped shirt, it moves easily from bay to night with me removal of a tie.

WHAT A WAIST:

Jeff's gut shrunk as he dropped six pounds of fat.

We all know Detroiters love to drive. But there are plenty of other things to do if you know where to look ...

Hot place to run: Try Kensington Metropark (800.477.3178, metroparks.com), with eight miles of paved trails wooded hills, and views of Kent Lake. Cool place to chill: Hockeytown Cafe (2301 Woodward Ave., downtown; 313.965.9500, hockeytowncafe.com). This restaurant-and-bar offers great city views and enough memorabilia to be a Red Wings museum.

Best playground: Joe Dumars' Fieldhouse (45300 Mound Rd., Shelby Township, 30 minutes from downtown; 586.731.3080, jeodumarsfieldhouse.com). The former Pistons all-star Joe Dumars owns this facility, where folks of all ages play basketball, volleyball, and rock-climb. Healthy ethnic eating: La Shish (22039 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, 15 minutes from downtown Detroit; 315.562.7200, lashish.com/. Vegetarian dishes dominate the menu at this Middle Eastern restaurant. Gotta see: MotorSports Museum & Hall of Fame (1-96 and Novi Rd., Novi; 30 minutes from downtown; 800.250.7223, mshf.com; admission $4). More than 40 muscle cars from the greatest moments in drag-, stock car-, Indy-, and motorcycle-racing history are on display.

IN YOUR FACE:

Pore cleansing? Easy. V[O.sub.2] maintenance? Not so much.
