What it feels like to … Get smashed in the chest with 479 pounds
Men's Fitness, August, 2004 by David Scott
Talk about a dead lift. Competing in a Rapid City, S.D., bench-press event, Tom Hines lost his grip while lifting nearly a quarter of a ton.
How'd it happen? Hines' left hand slipped from the bar just seconds after he picked it up. "My hand was numb because my shirt was pinching me in a bad way right at the elbow," he says. Although there were spotters in position on both sides of the bench, the slip happened so quickly that the left spotter didn't have time to react.
What was it like? The bar hit hard below Hines' left pectoral. "For a second, I couldn't breathe," he says. "Everyone rushed the stage, and I remember hearing a lady scream, 'Oh my God!'"

What happened next? Docs checked Tom out and found nothing punctured. Ridiculously, despite the pain, Hines performed another lift in order to maintain his place in the contest.
