Preworkout protein - Letters

Men's Fitness,  August, 2002  by Mark Vassar

I have a question concerning the preworkout meal in Ask Our Experts [June]. If you drink half of a protein drink before going to the gym, should you still drink a full serving after a workout? Also, does it hurt to add protein powder to a small bowl of whole-grain cereal about 45 minutes before a workout?

Drinking a full serving of protein after your workout won't be a problem, Mark. As per the advice in Ask Our Experts, a good preworkout protein source "is half a cup of cottage cheese or less than 200 calories of a protein drink." To maintain and build lean muscle mass, we typically recommend eating approximately one gram of protein per pound of body weight. As long as you're not experiencing any gastrointestinal problems, what, you're doing now is fine.
