Models Inc - Letters
Men's Fitness, August, 2002 by John Smith
I'm 25 years old and have been reading your mag for about three years now. I'm 5'11", 168 pounds and believe that I'm in unbelievable shape--I work out twice a day, four days a week--and that I have the body and the look to be in MEN'S FITNESS. It's been my dream since I was 12 to be a fitness model, and now I believe I'm ready. But I have no idea where to start.
I know I have to go through an agency, but which ones should I contact? I want to go straight to the big ones to see if I've got what it takes. I'm sure I can make it big if given the chance. I have a portfolio, and an aunt who lives in Los Angeles, with whom I can stay while I pursue this. Could you tell me the top modeling agencies, preferably the ones that supply the models you use?

John, there's no rule that says you have to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a model, but being in a city with a wide variety of agencies to choose from does help. That said, there are a number of credible agencies in just about every major city in North America. We recommend you go online and punch in "modeling agencies" on a search engine. If you're skeptical about an agency's methods, ask to see a list of its clients and the names of any magazines or print ads where its models have recently appeared.
We can't promise you anything, but next time you send in a letter, attach a couple of pictures. We don't have time to reply to every individual who sends in photos, but, if you've got what it takes, it's worth a shot. Just a heads up, though--most of our models who are your height weigh between 180 and 200 pounds. Good luck.
