IF YOU'RE ONE OF THOSE GUYS who bellows like a dying moose to help move heavy loads, you can quit now--the benefits of all that groaning are probably negligible, especially if you work out regularly. When Dennis O'Connell, Ph.D., professor of physical therapy at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, directed experienced exercisers to lift weights with and without grunting, he found that the noisemaking had virtually no effect on the muscle force or the amount of weight lifted.
