WITH SUMMER UPON US, a man's thoughts turn to one thing (well, one thing other than sunscreen): barbecue! Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs. Frankly (pun!), this seasonal wienerfest ain't good for ya. According to a recent study published in the International Journal of Cancer, men who eat a lot of processed meats (sausage, hot dogs, bacon, luncheon meat) significantly increase their risk for colon cancer.

And when you combine that research with a study out of Harvard University that says too much processed meat can hike your risk for diabetes--well, you'd better make that a dachshund-sized helping of `dog. But don't toss out those briquettes just yet: The preservatives sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate, the triggers of these diseases, are not found in fresh meats such as steaks and chops.
