Irreconcilable interactions - Food & Drugs - Brief Article

Mike Carlson

NOT ALL FOODS and drugs mix with the alacrity of stray canines. In fact, it's always a good idea to ask your pharmacist whether any food or beverage will disrupt the absorption of medications. For example, milk, alcohol and grapefruit juice can interfere with the effectiveness of some drugs. Vitamin K (in broccoli, for example) can alter the effectiveness of warfarin, a blood thinner. Cheese and sausage shouldn't be consumed with certain antidepressants, and caffeine taken with certain ulcer medications and antibiotics can cause stomach problems. For more information, go to the National Consumers League Web site at www.nclnet.org and click on "Food & Drug Interactions brochure." Just be sure you're Microsoft-compatible.
