Dial-a-doc: three essentials for picking a new physician

Men's Fitness,  Oct, 2004  by Peggy Noonan

You'd scope out a mechanic before letting him work on your ride. Why do any less for your bod? Here's what you need to know when looking for a new doctor.

* Search in the right places, i.e., not the phone book. Edward Hill, M.D., president-elect of the American Medical Association, suggests visiting the AMA's Web site (dbapps.amaassn.org/ aps/amahg.htm), which contains a database of all practicing doctors in the country. It's searchable by name, region, and specialty.

* Check your doctor's licensing. Call your state medical board. "They'll tell you if the person's paperwork is up-to-date," says Hill. Find yours at fsmb.org.

* Choose a specialist. You wouldn't go to Dunkin' Donuts for French bread. Ditto with health care. Call the American Board of Medical Specialties (1-866-ASK-ABMS) and ask if the doctor you're evaluating has the best qualifications.
